A home based business provides many rewards such as working in the comfort of your own home, avoiding a stressful commute, being your own boss, setting your own hours, no dress code, etc., etc., but anyone that is also expecting “instant riches” is sadly mistaken.
There are a tremendous number of home business and work at home opportunities offered on the Internet. Many of these are all hype and try to convince you that it doesn’t take any effort and that you will be making huge amounts of money in very little time (you know, stuff like…”you will be making $5,000 per week, and more, in just a few weeks!”). You should avoid these so called “opportunities” like the plague…if they were for real everyone would be doing it.
Study the opportunities carefully and select the home business opportunity that seems to fit your own particular style or talents. What is a good choice for one person may be a very poor fit for someone else. The common thread that applies to everyone is that you must be “for real” (as indicated above) and the business opportunity itself must be “for real”.

INTRODUCTION: Individualised exercise training programs in spinal cord injury (SCI) individuals are considered highly effective for improving and maintaining capacity for physical activity, as well as for reducing cardiovascular risk. However, no consensus exists on the type, intensity, and frequency of the training programs for SCI. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature about training program characteristics for SCI and describe their efficacy, limits, and results, with the aim of proposing specific recommendations. METHODS: Query using Medline and Embase databases. Ninety-nine references were found, including the following: Clinical studies examining physical endurance capacity of individuals with SCI, physiological responses to maximal exercise, or cardiovascular differences between sedentary and wheelchair-trained subjects; Articles? investigating the effects of training programmes for SCI. RESULTS: Various combinations of training intensity, duration, frequency, type, and ergometers have been proposed for SCI. Whatever the characteristics of the training program, a review of 25 cardiorespiratory training studies involving SCI subjects revealed an average improvement of 9% to 99% in VO2max, 19% to 118% in power wheelchairs
power output, and a decrease in submaximal values after 4 to 36 weeks of training. DISCUSSION - CONCLUSION: Wheelchair ergometers seems to be interesting for SCI because it mimics closely the daily motor tasks of wheelchair users and allows for adjustment of the medicare power wheelchairs. Both continuous and interval training programmes are appropriate, but intermittent exercise intensities may be more beneficial since they mimic the intermittent nature of daily activity patterns. Furthermore, on the basis of the results of these studies, we recommend that training at or above 70% of maximum heart rate, for 30 minutes of rhythmic exercise, three days per week during eight weeks, will provide a sound of basis for design of an endurance exercise programme for people with SCI.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of neighborhood ethnic composition on power wheelchairs prescriptions. DESIGN: The 5% noncancer sample of Medicare recipients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare linked database, from 1994 to 2001. SETTING: SEER regions. PARTICIPANTS: Individuals covered by Medicare living in SEER regions without a cancer diagnosis. MEASUREMENTS: Individual characteristics (age, sex, ethnicity, justifying diagnosis, and comorbidity), primary diagnoses, neighborhood characteristics (percentage black, percentage Hispanic, percentage with <12 years education, and median income), and SEER region. RESULTS: The rate of power wheelchair prescriptions was 33 times greater in 2001 than in 1994, with a shift over time from justifying diagnoses more closely tied to mobility impairment, such as strokes, to less-specific medical diagnoses, such as osteoarthritis. In multilevel, multivariate analyses, individuals living in neighborhoods with higher percentages of blacks or Hispanics were more likely to receive power wheelchairs (odds ratios=1.09 for each 10% increase in black residents and 1.23 for each 10% increase in Hispanic residents) after controlling for ethnicity and other characteristics at the individual level. CONCLUSION: These results support allegations that marketers promoting power wheelchairs and handicap scooters have specifically targeted minority neighborhoods.

PURPOSE: To determine: (1) what power wheelchairs manoeuvrability factors are important and (2) the effects of powered wheelchair design on the ability to reach in a confined space. METHOD: The relative importance of five aspects of wheelchair manoeuvrability was determined through a survey of users of wheelchairs (N = 52) and health care professionals and others (N = 89). A single young, non-disabled subject undertook repeated trials of reach distance on to a counter at the end of a corridor whose width could be adjusted by moving Styrofoam walls. RESULTS: Reaching, moving in confined spaces and avoiding collisions were more important than speed and avoiding the need to drive backwards. The rear wheel drive powered wheelchair was found to allow the greatest reach when driving backwards into the space and the medicare power wheelchairs which moved in a sideways direction allowed greatest reach in the narrowest corridor. CONCLUSIONS: The survey concluded that manoeuvring in small spaces and reaching without collisions were important. The powered wheelchair with sideways capability afforded the greatest reach in confined spaces except when the rear wheel drive chair was driven in backwards. The survey respondents did not place a high priority on avoiding backwards driving but some people find this difficult to do safely.

A focus group comprised of persons who use power wheelchairs, handicap scooters and professionals working in the field were asked to participate in a brainstorming session to determine priorities for the development and application of power mobility input devices and control concepts. The group consensus was that durability and reliability are the most important criteria. Essentially, the expectation is that a power wheelchair must work everyday in the way a person needs it and wants it. At the same time, there is a desire to enhance and advance the features of input devices and control systems. Many would say these changes constitute designing “smarter” power wheelchairs, such as systems that can independently detect obstacles and can provide users with more feedback. STUDY DESIGN: Review of publications. OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of physical capacity (peak oxygen uptake, medical scooters peak power output, muscle strength of the upper extremity and respiratory function) in wheelchair-dependent persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI). SETTING: Erasmus MC, University Medical Centre Rotterdam, The Netherlands. METHODS: Pubmed (Medline) search of publications from 1980 onwards. Studies were systematically assessed. Weighted means were calculated for baseline values. RESULTS: In tetraplegia, the weighted mean for peak oxygen uptake was 0.89 l/min for the wheelchair exercise test (WCE) and 0.87 l/min for arm-cranking or hand-cycling (ACE). The peak power output was 26 W (WCE) and 40 W (ACE). In paraplegia, the peak oxygen uptake was 2.10 l/min (WCE) and 1.51 l/min (ACE), whereas the peak power output was 74 W (ACE) and 85 W (WCE). In paraplegia, muscle strength of the upper extremity and respiratory function were comparable to that in the able-bodied population. In tetraplegia muscle strength varied greatly, and respiratory function was reduced to 55-59% of the predicted values for an age-, gender- and height-matched able-bodied population. CONCLUSIONS: Physical capacity is reduced and varies in SCI. The variation between results is caused by population and methodological differences. Standardized measurement of physical capacity is needed to further develop comparative values for clinical practice and rehabilitation research
