Distribution and cost of wheelchairs and scooters provided by Veterans Health Administration

Posted in Cast, Crew, Entertainment by Admin

Distribution and cost of wheelchairs and scooters provided by Veterans Health Administration

During fiscal years 2000 and 2001, the Veterans Health Administration provided veterans with more than 131,000 power wheelchairs and medical scooters at a cost of $109 million. This national study is the first to investigate Veterans Health Administration costs in providing wheelchairs and scooters and to compare regional prescription patterns. With a retrospective design, we used descriptive methods to analyze fiscal years 2000 and 2001 National Prosthetics Patient Database data (cleaned data set of 113,724 records). Wheelchairs were categorized by function, weight, and adjustability options for meeting individual needs (e.g., axle position, camber, position of wheels, tilt, and recline options). Results displayed a cost distribution that was negatively skewed by low-cost accessories coded as wheelchairs. Of the standard manual wheelchairs, 3.5% could be considered beyond the customary cost. Regionally, 71% to 86% of all wheelchairs provided were manual wheelchairs, 5% to 11% were power wheelchairs, and 5% to 20% were scooters. The considerable variation found in the types of wheelchairs and scooters provided across Veterans Integrated Service Networks may indicate a need for evidence-based prescription guidelines and clinician training in wheeled-mobility technologies.

Introduce Yourself With An Introduction Cover Letter

Think of yourself as someone about to meet a strangera man or woman you want to know but as yet, do not. Are you stepping out into success?

Posted in Entertainment, Other, Story by Admin

Are you stepping out into success?

Many of us think of applying the pressure as failing. ‘The pressure is coming. Oh my gosh! What am I going to do? The pressure is coming.’ But pressure doesn’t need to be a negative: I love this quote.

Pressure is a word that is misused in our vocabulary. When you start thinking of pressure, it’s because you started to think of failure. Tommy Lasorda

When you stop and think about what happens in life, pressure is being applied constantly in many different arenas. An example would be rush hour traffic that puts more and more pressure on the highways. As the population grows more and more pressure is added. What happens? Do we, as a society, give up and say ‘oh, well. Too Bad? It’s just going to take you that much longer to transit into work’? Your commute time, instead of being an hour and a half, is going to be 2 hours. And in 3 years from now, it’s going to be 4 hours. Or do we take the action, as a society, as a city, as a person and do something to relieve that pressure? Yes we do something that will alleviate the pressure for all of that traffic coming into the downtown core.

We as a society, as a city, step into success. We do something to alleviate that pressure. We can learn to apply that concept in our life. Instead of taking a look at the pressure as a bad thing we can use it to build something new, a bridge to our future. Do we do what Tommy Lasorda said-misuse that word ‘pressure’ and think of it as ‘oh, I’m going to fail, I’m going to fail’ and then give up? - or do we CHOOSE to do something different and step into our own success?

We all have habits. What is your ‘it’? What is the ‘it’ that stops you? When you start to feel that pressure, what do you do? Next time that happens, I want you to stop and think, ‘what am I automatically doing here’? Then decide to do something different in order to get a different result.

When I was first introduced to this concept, I did not recognize what habit I fell into until I was all the way in it. Stress eating was one of the things I used to do. As I learn to recognize where that pressure point is, what my habit is, what my ‘it’ is, I, can learn how to change it, how to react differently.

I just watched the movie ‘What the Bleep?! - Down the Rabbit Hole’. One of the concepts in the movie is that we, as human beings, are bombarded every second with 400 billion bits of information. We only process 2000, therefore we need to choose carefully which bits we pay attention too. When we succumb to the pressure and fall into a negative habit, like I used to when I was stress eating, we are selecting only a narrow negative portion of information from the 4 billion bits..

I have decided that I am going to choose a different 2,000 bits of information. It really is just a choice.. We need to recognize what our habits, and that we can change our habits. Millions of people have learned how to stop the stress eating habit. Millions of people have learned how to quit smoking. Millions and millions of people have learned how to make their life and Starscapes.com business opportunity better, how to step into success. If they can do it, I can do it. If I can do it, you can do it. It’s all just a simple choice, to make a different decision.

If you are a parent ask yourself, if you choose non-success habits, what are the habits and passions that you are creating in your children? Are you creating a generational curse or a generational legacy? Another great quote is “children have never been good at listening to their elders. But they have never failed to imitate them”. by James Baldwin. Even if you aren’t a parent what about the influence you have on the people around you?

We need to learn to recognize when we are backing off from pressure, when we are moving into the habits that are not success habits (the ones that we need to change). We also need to recognize the habits that we have that are good, that are leading us towards success, leading us to our financial freedom. We need to be aware so that we can make changes in our negative habits and reinforce our positive habits.

We need to learn to recognize that when we wish for something, ask for something, pray for something or when we say affirmations for something, it’s not going to just happen. It’s not going to be handed to us on a silver platter. One of my affirmations is “I am building a team of dream achievers” Now, I know that that is going to take patience and perseverance and that this whole team of dream achievers are not just going to be dumped in my lap. I have to go looking for them and attract them into my life.

As I go down the personal development journey and build my home business I come up against pressure points all the time. When I think back to the pressure points in my life last year at this time versus this year - whoa! - last year’s ones seem really simple now. What happens? We are not given exactly what we want right off the bat. But we are given the opportunity to develop the skills so that we get better. On my journey, I am becoming a better team leader. I am practicing my patience and my perseverance in my own learning so that I become that better learner that attracts, using the Law of Cause and Effect, that team of dream achievers, the team of business builders.

When that pressure is applied in our lives, patience and perseverance, is what we need in order to grow through that pressure point. Once we do grow and find different habits to allow us to get past that pressure point, to allow us to develop the skills, to learn those new things that we need to learn, we come to a better place and we can handle more pressure. We have new skills. We know something different. We react in a different away. We remain patient. We practice the perseverance and can step into success.

Are you applying enough pressure? Are you stepping out into success? Take a look at your habits. What do you do when the pressure hits? Are you giving yourself the opportunity to develop a new skill, to become even better than you already are? I would love to hear about those experiences.. Send me an email at Carla at retirewithcarla.com or give me a phone call at (778) 835-4032 and let me know, what are the habits that you’ve come across? What are some of the things that you have done differently?

Comparison of blood lactate elimination in individuals with paraplegia and able-bodied individuals during active recovery from exhaustive exercise

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare blood lactate elimination between individuals with paraplegia (P) and able-bodied (AB) individuals after strenuous arm exercise. METHODS: Eight P and 8 AB men (matched for age, height, and weight) participated in this study. Average weekly arm-training volume for P participants (eg, handicap scooters, medicare power wheelchairs basketball) and AB participants (eg, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing) was 4.1 +/- 1.6 vs 2.8 +/- 0.8 h. A maximal-arm-cranking intensity-graded exercise test to volitional exhaustion was performed by all test participants. Immediately after the exercise test, the participants performed arm cranking for another 30 minutes at a workload of one third of the maximally achieved power output. During this active recovery, mixed-capillary blood samples were taken for lactate analysis. RESULTS: The lactate accumulation constant was significantly higher for P individuals, whereas the lactate elimination constant showed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with paraplegia seem to have no disadvantages in lactate elimination after exhaustive arm exercise compared with able-bodied individuals

Reliability and validity of the power-mobility community driving assessment

Posted in Cast, Crew, Entertainment by Admin

Reliability and validity of the power-mobility community driving assessment

The Power-Mobility Community Driving Assessment (PCDA) is a performance-based measure designed to assess driving performance of individuals using power wheelchairs or handicap scooters in community environments. This article reports the results of pilot testing and an evaluation of the assessment’s reliability and validity. Pilot testing was conducted with a random selection of Canadian occupational therapists working in the area of mobility. Although the response rate was very low, feedback confirmed the utility of the measure and contributed to one substantive scoring revision. Reliability and validity testing was conducted with a sample of 34 drivers. Internal consistency results were positive. Interrater reliability was fair to high but limited by the lack of variability in the scores. Construct validity hypotheses were tested on the relationships between PCDA scores and vision, perception, cognition, and environmental accessibility. Results indicated no relationships between the PCDA and perceptual and cognitive function and only a weak trend for a relationship with environmental accessibility. Concurrent validity was established: PCDA scores were positively associated with the judgments of therapists familiar with the driving performance of participants. In summary, the PCDA has moderate to good reliability, and content and concurrent validity results were found. More research is needed, particularly on the underlying constructs of successful driving performance. At this point, rehabilitation professionals and their clients are urged to use this assessment to establish driving performance rather than relying on assessments of perception, cognition, or environmental accessibility to predetermine whether someone will receive power mobility. Clinicians may find this a useful tool to identify where clients are able to drive safely in community settings, to identify specific learning needs, and, through those, to promote independent living for drivers of power-mobility devices.

Choosing the Business

Posted in Cast, Story, Trailer by Admin

Choosing the Business

A home based business opportunity can be either product-oriented or service-oriented. Product-oriented businesses are usually two types: a) selling products made by you, family members and/or employees (like raw materials such as fabrics or tanned leather, kits like yarn/pattern and knitting needles, partially finished items like unpainted bird houses or completed articles such as jewelry and belt buckles) or b)selling products manufactured by others and either purchased by you for resale or sold on an order basis. Services may involve performing a service at the place of business (word processing, tutoring, bookkeeping or child care) or at another location (house painting, carpet cleaning or consulting). To determine or confirm your business opportunity idea(s), examine your interests, skills and abilities, education/training, and experiences.
You must enjoy doing the work involved. Just because you make super apple pies or wooden toys doesn’t mean that you would want to create them six days a week. Perhaps you would rather teach others to make pies or toys! Teaching requires a totally different set of skills and interests than doing the actual work yourself. See (Appendix A) for a list of business ideas.

Cashing In On A Great Home Writing Business

Posted in Entertainment, Other, Story by Admin

Cashing In On A Great Home Writing Business

If you have ever had experience in writing blogs or stories for the Internet, then you may want to consider a home writing business to generate some extra money. This is a great way for you to make money, and do something creative at the same time. There are several sites on the web where you can place your portfolio, and line up work in the writing field. There are many things that people look for when they are browsing this type of site; some need factual work done, while others are looking for a resume or class term paper to be written. This is an home business opportunity for you to make some really good money, and if you play your cards right and do a good job others will take notice and seek you for work as well.
Straightforward
One of the most important aspects of running a home writing business is being straightforward with a client. If you are not able to accomplish something that they are asking for, you are best served to inform them and move on to the next job either with them or someone else. If you take a job that you are not sure you can complete, then you are running a great risk of closing yourself off of any future work. Any smart customer is not new to this situation, and they are more than likely smart enough to employ a plagiarism tool that can detect if you have cut and pasted work to pass it off as finished. This is in poor practice and eventually the client will catch you. The best policy and easiest way for you to generate more business for the future, is to be good at what you do and be straightforward with the customer from the beginning.
Limitless Writing Options
When you are running a home writing business opportunity, you have many great opportunities to do several unique projects. You can be writing about something technical one week, and the next you could be helping someone with a screenplay. This shows just how diverse the writing business really is, and you never know exactly what you will be doing from one moment to the next. This is great to help break up monotony, and you will not find this type of work tedious or boring. If you think that you can handle sitting in front of a computer screen for several hours per day, then this may very well be the job you have been waiting for.
Seeking Out Clients And Long Term Contracts
If you are looking for ways to make your home writing business a success, then you will want to find ways to generate plenty of clients and long-term contracts. These contracts are very important; as they allow you to pace yourself, and make sure that you have the work presented exactly as the customer wants it. A business like this is no different than any other in the workforce, as the customer is always right because they are the ones paying you for your services.

The effects of arm crank strategy on physiological responses and mechanical efficiency during submaximal exercise

Posted in Crew, Other, Story by Admin

The effects of arm crank strategy on physiological responses and mechanical efficiency during submaximal exercise

The purpose of this study was to compare submaximal physiological responses and indices of mechanical efficiency between asynchronous and synchronous arm ergometry. Thirteen medicare power wheelchairs -dependent trained athletes performed eight steady-state incremental bouts of exercise (0 to 140 W), each lasting 4 min, using synchronous and asynchronous arm-cranking strategies. Physiological measures included oxygen uptake (VO2), heart rate, and blood lactate concentration. The power wheelchairs outputs corresponding to fixed whole blood lactate concentrations of 2.0 to 4.0 mmol x l(-1) were calculated using linear interpolation. Mechanical efficiency indices - gross efficiency, net efficiency, and work efficiency - were also calculated. An analysis of variance with repeated measures was applied to determine the effect of crank mode on the physiological parameters. Oxygen uptake was on average 10% lower (P < 0.01), and both net efficiency (P < 0.01) and gross efficiency (P < 0.01) were higher, during the asynchronous strategy at both 60 and 80 W (gross efficiency: 16.9 +/- 2.0% vs. 14.7 +/- 2.4% and 17.5 +/- 1.8% vs. 15.9 +/- 2.6% at 60 and 80 W respectively). There were no differences in heart rate, blood lactate concentration or power output at either of the blood lactate reference points between the asynchronous and synchronous strategies (P > 0.05). In conclusion, test specificity is an important consideration. If a synchronous strategy is to be adopted, it is likely to result in lower efficiency than an asynchronous strategy. The exercise testing scenario may help dictate which method is ultimately chosen

The smart wheelchair component system

Posted in Cast, Crew, Entertainment by Admin

The smart wheelchair component system

While the needs of many individuals with disabilities can be satisfied with power wheelchairs and medicare power wheelchairs, some members of the disabled community find it difficult or impossible to operate a standard power wheelchair. To accommodate this population, several researchers have used technologies originally developed for mobile robots to create “smart wheelchairs” that reduce the physical, perceptual, and cognitive skills necessary to operate a power wheelchair. We are developing a Smart Wheelchair Component System (SWCS) that can be added to a variety of commercial power wheelchairs with minimal modification. This paper describes the design of a prototype of the SWCS, which has been evaluated on wheelchairs from four different manufacturers.

Starting A Small Home Business With Little Income Potential

Posted in Cast, Story, Trailer by Admin

Starting A Small Home Business With Little Income Potential

Why would anyone contemplate starting a small home business with little income potential? You may be surprised to know that this is indeed much more common than you might imagine. As a matter of fact, the idea of ferreting out income opportunities that may not carry the promise of upfront riches is a much underrated methodology of supporting a real money maker!
For example, if you consider opening an online business that specializes in a service, such as the sale of your language lessons for children of elementary school age, you may find that your niche is woefully limited. As a matter of fact, you may find that parents actively searching out websites just as yours are few and far between.
Thus starting a small Starscapes.com business opportunity with little income potential and then tying it to your real endeavor will have a twofold impact: you will generate some income that will defray the cost of web hosting, and other site related expenses, while at the same time expanding the target audience which will visit your website.
Back to the example aforementioned: if you are selling language lessons to young children - a service by and large not a hot button search topic for many a parent - but have added a revenue stream on the side that will perhaps make you an affiliate for a major educational toy or book retailer, your site will suddenly experience a mass appeal, thus heavily increasing the visitors to your site and therefore the exposure of your main program.
Keeping visitors on your site is another endeavor that is just as crucial as getting them there in the first place; to this end, you may find that free e-book giveaways, online games, lessons plans, and craft ideas are a wonderful way of making your site perhaps not a sales vehicle only but instead giving it an almost portal like quality. To this end, starting a small home business with little income potential - such as affiliate marketing an education book - can have a most lucrative effect on your mainline business, namely the business of teaching young children a different language.
Affiliate programs are of course quite plentiful in and of themselves, and therefore it is vital that you find one that is not only germane to your main line of business but in the same way does not stand to be a competition. While an appeal to the target audience is vital, not offering a broadly enough appeal is detrimental. You may be able to achieve this by offering a separate section of your site and devoting it to parent resources. If possible, you will be wise to showcase material that point out just how important language lessons may be to a growing child.
Even as the odds of you - the reader - selling language lessons may not be overly great, the fact that starting a small home business with a limited income potential may be the key for ensuring a high volume of sales for your main money maker is an almost universal truth you will be wise to examine. Making a little money in an effort to make a lot more is indeed a smart move on many different fronts!

5 Essential Ingredients of a Successful Online Work at Home Business

Posted in Entertainment, Other, Story by Admin

5 Essential Ingredients of a Successful Online Work at Home Business

5 Essential Ingredients of a Successful Online Work at Starscapes.com business opportunity by: Carolyn Erickson
The internet changes daily as far as what works and what doesn’t when it comes to making money online.
If you are new to work at home online businesses, your head can spin with all the hype, sales pitches , and outright lies as far as the reality of starting up an online home based business.
There are however a few things to look for in your search for a work at home business that can become some nice additional income, or even better, your “job”. Working at home, generating $1000 a day is far from what I call a “job”.
To help ease your frustration, and point you in the right direction for what you should be looking for in today’s online marketplace, the following summarizes the 5 essential ingredients in a winning work at home online business opportunity.
Later in this brief overview, I will offer a “secret” to online success that is rarely mentioned in the many articles written on the subject.
1. SYSTEM- This may be the most crucial item to your success. You need a System that generates prospects, educates them on your business opportunity, sorts and weeds out those that are not interested in your offer, then closes the sale at a conversion rate that ensures profitability. The System must be as automated as possible so you aren’t spending hours cold calling or following up with people that are probably not interested, then trying to use your sales closing skills to make a sale.
Think of the successful off line businesses such as McDonalds, Tim Hortons or Subway. Do you think they could duplicate those businesses all over the country, setting up new franchise owners to run these businesses, without a SYSTEM that works?
2. BIG Profits- This is important as the advertising needed to result in sales can be quite costly. For some $1000 price point business programs, it isn’t unusual to spend $200, $400 or even $600 to make that $1000 sale. Of course, there are ways to also spend $0 in advertising, but the reality is advertising is often on the range where to make $1, you may need to spend $0.40. Your profit is still $0.60. Would you do that over and over if you had a automated system in place to make this happen? Big Profits allows enough profit so your advertising cost is well covered by your selling price. You can’t do much advertising to make a profit on selling a $20 ebook for example.
3. Hot Products- Yes, the product must be tangible and have use and value. There are many new business opportunities that offer $75,000 or more worth of downloadable products that sell for $1000. That’s pretty HOT, and full of value. Having a product that can be downloaded, means NO shipping. Now that is just way too easy.
4. Leads and Traffic- This is probably the most perplexing for most new work at home business owners. An online business will never make any money without a source of leads (prospects). The key to providing leads to an online business is they need to be targeted.
This means you need to advertise to a niche market of people looking for exactly what your offers. Seems so simple a concept, but so may people struggle in building their prospect list.
5. Support and Training- as with any business start up, you need to learn your work at home online business program.Make sure that your business program has ample training and resources so you know exactly what to do to get those prospects to your System. This is not always easy to figure out when doing your due diligence on an offer.
As a suggestion, make sure you ask for examples of where and how you will advertise. Also ask where will you get the wording for the ads,who will write the ad copy and the followup messages, what the conversion rates are for your system. If your sponsor can’t provide good answers, then they may not be that successful themselves.
This is just a brief overview of what today’s online business programs need to cut through the many offers out there and make your business stand out to others.
Earlier I mentioned I’d offer a “secret” to successful online work at home business programs that is rarely mentioned in the various sales pitches. The true secret just might be you.
Most people do not realize they are starting up a real business. There will be ups and downs, profitability may not come overnight, or you may expect riches in the first few days.
I am sure some people have had such success, but most starting out, very likely start with leads, no prior list of prospects, and a small advertising budget. You then need to make good decisions to leverage your sales to grow your business.
The best way to accomplish an online business start up is with the very best automated SYSTEM. Then you can spend most of your time on advertising and growing your prospect list- leaving the rest to the system to close sales which will deliver you paying customers. Then you can train your new customers to do what you know how to do!
For more information on automated systems, please take a look at our main business review website.

A Home Based Business Can Be A Great Adventure

A Home Based Business Can Be A Great Adventure

Anyone that is tired of the regular 9 to 5 office job and in need of a change of scenery, should consider taking on a home based business. This is a great Starscapes business opportunity for someone to start their own small company out of the comforts of their own surroundings, and have no one but himself or herself to be accountable for. Being your own boss has many perks that make working from home a lot of fun, and if you are set to succeed this can be the change that you have been waiting for. With hours that suit you, and the option to pick and choose days to work this type of employment is what many people dream of yet shy away from as they are afraid to take the first leap of faith.
Several Options Available To You
Running a home based business opportunity can be a very rewarding experience, but you need to find out what it is that you want to do before you can actually get started. With a plethora of options available to you, you can even try your hand at a few projects at once if you feel that you can handle the workload and the responsibilities. The best businesses however, are the ones that you seem to fit right into without much of a learning curve. This allows you to just right in and get your hands dirty, and you will not be wondering when your first amount of money will start coming in. Many people opt to try their hands at an Ebay store for their first endeavor. This is because this type of store is easy to get started, and the workload is extremely flexible. You can start by collecting what it is that you want to sell, and then placing a site on Ebay for the customers to view.
No Tax Relief
When you are dealing with a home based business, you need to keep in mind that you will be responsible for the taxes and the revenue aspect of this business all by yourself. Many times new company owners get caught up in a legal mess, because they fail to understand what owning your own business means when it comes to tax time. It is easy to forget that you still owe the government a specific amount of money depending on what you bring in. It would not hurt to speak to a tax agent either before you actually get the company off the ground, or during the early stages when things are still being set up. This will help eliminate any unfortunate tax issues that could land you in a heap of trouble that you cannot afford to get out of. While you are running this business it is also helpful for you to keep track of what you are spending and what you are bringing in income wise. There are actual things that can be written off by company owners in regards to their business, and this can be a huge tax relief.

The last idea to consider is creating a web site and selling your own products. There is nothing more rewarding then selling your own products that you created. Testing of gel-electrolyte batteries for wheelchairs

Posted in Cast, Crew, Entertainment by Admin

Testing of gel-electrolyte batteries for wheelchairs

A simple test rig was developed to measure the capacity of the lead-acid gel-electrolyte batteries used to power wheelchairs and medical scooters. Results of 166 tests revealed a wide scatter of battery life with different users and also showed that, in many cases, the two batteries used in a wheelchair became unequal in charge capacity after some time in use. It is recommended that pairs of batteries should be charged in series to overcome this problem.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of a home based business opportunity include having a flexible schedule; integration of family and work responsibilities; less involvement with others in a regular work environment, such as power struggles and red tape; no commuting time (unless you travel to a customer’s home or place of business); control of your own personal environment (temperature, light, work breaks, etc); self-determination and independence; increasing personal fulfillment; seeking and setting personal goals; enhancing creativity; and remaining in a community or moving with a spouse to a new community even when jobs are scarce or not available.
Disadvantages of a home business opportunity include needing to know a lot of information to operate a business successfully; the risk involved in operating a business; conflict in ownership of time (When is it my “own” time and when is “business” time?); lack of guaranteed employee fringe benefits; many competing roles and responsibilities (producer, promoter, bill collector, customer service representative); lack of job security; loss of home space use by family; interruptions; lack of self-discipline; little opportunity to delegate tasks to others; long hard hours, and legal requirements including zoning regulations. Being committed to a business may mean lack of freedom to do other things and to go as you please.

Obstacle avoidance for power wheelchair using bayesian neural network.

Posted in Crew, Other, Story by Admin

Obstacle avoidance for power wheelchair using bayesian neural network.

In this paper we present a real-time obstacle avoidance algorithm using a Bayesian neural network for a laser based medicare power wheelchairs system. The raw laser data is modified to accommodate the wheelchair dimensions, allowing the free-space to be determined accurately in real-time. Data acquisition is performed to collect the patterns required for training the neural network. A Bayesian frame work is applied to determine the optimal neural network structure for the training data. This neural network is trained under the supervision of the Bayesian rule and handicap scooters the obstacle avoidance task is then implemented for the wheelchair system. Initial results suggest this approach provides an effective solution for autonomous tasks, suggesting Bayesian neural networks may be useful for wider assistive technology applications
